Been there, done that indeed.
An A-list cast and high expectations surround director David Ayer's big studio debut Street Kings. Unfortunately, the story of corrupt L.A.P.D. cops falls into familiar territory, leaving its audience with not only an unshakable feeling of déjà vu, but also the distinct notion that this movie could have been something more.
In the film, Keanu Reeves stars as Tom Ludlow — a veteran police detective who finds life difficult to navigate after the death of his wife. As part of Ad Vice, a specialized unit of the L.A.P.D., he and his teammates (John Corbett, Jay Mohr and Amaury Nolasco) are part of a necessary evil that allows civilians and common people the freedoms and security they enjoy on a daily basis. But when evidence implicates him in the execution of a fellow officer, he is forced to go up against the cop culture he's been a part of his entire career, ultimately leading him to question the loyalties of everyone around him — including not only his brothers in blue, but also the team's leader and his surrogate father figure Captain Jack Wander (Forrest Whitaker).
While soaking in Street Kings in the calm of a darkened theater, one can't help but be smacked over the head by the feeling of, "I think I've seen this movie before." In fact, that's an easy supposition considering the mainstream popularity of such "the bad guy is really the good guy" kind of shows like The Shield and Damages. But the reality is that Ayer, the film's director, has become a slave to this very niche genre. Not only was he screenwriter for the like-minded Training Day (starring Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke), Dark Blue (starring Kurt Russell) and S.W.A.T. (starring Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell), but he also self-financed his directorial debut Harsh Times, which — you guessed it — deals with a morally ambiguous soon-to-be law enforcement officer in the streets of South Central L.A.. For his first big studio gig (if you consider Fox Searchlight big), one would think he'd take on project that moves his career to the next level. Instead, the helmer falls back on safe and familiar territory. Of course, this could be the fault of the studio system which thrives on familiarity. The truth is Ayer does manage to attract big name talent regardless of the déjà vu feeling his projects may elicit.

Speaking of big name talent, Reeves portrays the film's central character acting in nearly every scene of Street Kings. And while he tries his best to play a hard-living, emotionally troubled cop who questions his motivations, it's difficult for this reviewer not to see Neo peering back at him from the big screen. Of course, this can be attributed to the fact that Reeves has no emotional range whatsoever, using his much parodied "whoa" expression/face to emote fear, pain, anger, remorse, insert feeling here. It's nice to see his Detective Ludlow take a very real-life beating, however, especially when compared to the numerous superhuman personas the actor has played as of late.

As a side note, the always reliable Whitaker also turns in a somewhat odd performance. While he's believable in the role of Captain Jack Wander — acting both the docile public figure and ruthless enforcer with singular schizophrenia — he plays his character with a rather strange accent, one that is unidentifiable and serves to pull audiences out of the film.
Ultimately, the main benefit to having a veteran of this subject matter at the helm of the project comes across in each and every action sequence. The hard-hitting, R-rated violence is a throw back to revenge films of the '70s — part of a returning trend seen with the likes of Death Sentence and Man on Fire. And the attention to L.A.P.D. procedural detail is also readily apparent — even to a moviegoer who knows nothing about real-life police work.
In the end, Street Kings is a film in search of an identity. Sure, it has recognizable names to draw audiences in. But once the end credits roll and its viewers are left discussing the movie over coffee, they'll most likely find no difference between it and the slew of similarly themed projects (most associated with the same director) that came before it.
