The SEO articles are always revolving around those topics that would help you to stay away from penalization of Google. But what if it is penalized already because you were ignorant about a spammy element? It is not the end of the world.
Firstly, make sure that your website has been penalized. A ranking drop is not the indicator to determine this. Ensure that Google is not listing your website.
Do not panic. Prior to contacting Google, find the reasons for the issue. It could be one among the following: your website sell links, you make use of paid links, fully automated backlink system, hidden text, plagiarized content, keyword stuffing, sneaky redirects, etc.
Remove the unappreciable elements from your website. Make sure that you follow the Google guidelines for SEO. Now, file for a reconsideration request.
Google is smart enough to detect the spam sooner or later. Use white hat techniques hereafter at least.
